Thai Hale Eco Cottage

The Thai Hale (ha-lay, which mean house in Hawaiian) is an exotic place to relax and enjoy the secluded nature of our sacred Hawaiian land. It was designed to bring masculine and feminine energies together in a smooth flow of yin and yang, with both round and square shapes working in harmony. Intricately carved Balinese doors begin your journey from path to house, as the eye catching roof line (inspired by Thai temples) presents itself.

Built entirely of renewable bamboo, this abode is so unique that even before construction was completed it was featured on the prestigious German travel show “Reiselust” (Wanderlust). Decorated with elegant furnishings, porcelain, stained glass and the finest of natural silk and linen fabrics, the Thai Hale has a sleeping loft with a queen sized bed and Tantric meditation corner, as well as a small single bedroom on the first floor. The Thai Hale comes equipped with a full private kitchen and bathroom.

The underwater themed outdoor shower, designed by an award-winning artist, overlooks the ocean and takes “sensuous bathing” to a whole new level. The wrap around lanai provides an outdoor living area with couches, tables, and chairs and a view of the Thai Hale’s beautiful garden and the sea.

Mahalo!

Car Rental Suggestions

We recommend the earth-friendly Bio Beetle, powered by Biodiesel. Or, please contact our friend and neighbor Nicolas Kern at carrentalhawaii.com for additional options.

Your Stay at Maui Retreat

We encourage you to visit our website to learn more about what Maui Retreat has to offer. You will find out what workshops are available during your stay, and how to schedule a private session with Kutira and Raphael, as well as information on how to schedule a lovely Pohaku Lomi Lomi massage.

Bring good walking shoes so that you may comfortably explore the land, mosquito repellent for certain areas of the island and a water bottle to fill up with our delicious well water.

In your room, you will find a guest book filled with valuable information. Please take a look through it when you arrive so that your stay is informed by a deeper understanding of our ecological space. Let us know if you would like to be shown around- there will always be someone to attend to your needs.

Food

We do not provide food or meals with lodging. Subject to availability, we may have fresh eggs and fruit grown on the land available for purchase. As there are no stores or restaurants in Huelo, you may wish to pick up some food items in either Kahului or Paia. We will provide you with shopping bags once you are here.

We highly recommend Mana Foods store and deli in Paia, as they have excellent organic, raw food, vegan and fresh fish offerings. When you get to the stop light in Paia, turn onto Baldwin Avenue- Mana Foods is about 1 block or so on the left. There is public parking on the left just past the market.

We also recommend that you stop by Mr. Pineapple and mention Maui Retreat. They offer great gift shipping back to the mainland.

For very late arrival, we do offer a shopping service. Please contact us in advance with a detailed shopping list and we will have your groceries waiting for you when you arrive. The cost for this service is $25 + 10% of the cost of goods.

Art and Music Boutique

Your room is provided with CDs of Kutira and Raphael’s music for your listening pleasure- if you would like to explore our complete catalog or buy a CD, they are available for purchase in the Maui Retreat Office and on our website. If you love the artisan treasures you find in your space, Kutira has a small arts boutique and by request through the office she would be happy to share her unique pieces with you.

Driving Directions

Please use our driving directions instead of online GPS maps – they are not accurate to our property!

We suggest that you read the directions in advance paying special attention to the last portion of the journey, and please visit our website in order to familiarize yourself with the visual cues so you feel familiar before you even start to drive. Thank you for preparing yourself to arrive safely at our place.

Driving time from the airport can run from 35-45 minutes, depending on how many stops you make along the way.

From the airport, take Hwy 36 (Hana Highway) left/east (towards Hana/Haiku). Proceed through the town of Paia. There are green highway markers (which start with “0″ in Kahului). When you reach mile marker “16″ (Hwy 365 junction), the mile markers begin again with “0″. Continue on Hana Highway past the “3″ mile marker. Start to keep an eye out when you pass Twin Falls on your right. At about 3.5 miles past the “3″ mile marker, on the left you will see a road with a little bus stop bench and a double row of mailboxes. If you arrive after dark, you will see a street lamp above the road entrance. This is Door of Faith Road. Turn left onto Door of Faith Road, continuing between the bus bench and the mailboxes. Our place is only 1 mile away.
Stay on the paved road as it veers right until you see the paved road turn sharply to the left (at about 1/2 mile). The paved road turns left here, but you will continue to go STRAIGHT ahead onto a gravel/dirt road.

Please honor our 5 mph speed limit when you enter the dirt road- our neighbors’ children may be playing.

Right after a small concrete bridge with no railings, you will see a “Bamboo Farm” sign pointing right, up the hill. When you drive up the hill, you will come to a fork with another small “Bamboo Farm” sign pointing left. On the right is a driveway toward private property. Do not go straight up this driveway.

Follow the road to the left until you see a sign on your left that says, “Kahua O’Malio Bamboo Farm – By Appointment Only”. On the right you will see a bamboo gazebo with a white statue of Saraswati, the Goddess of music. Take the driveway on the right immediately after the Kahua O’Malio sign and in front of Saraswati, into the parking area with the “Parking – 610″ sign. You will see a walkway toward a large yellow house with a white sitting Buddha in front. This is our main house, the Opua House. If you are not greeted immediately, honk your horn or come to the main house door and you will be welcomed.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU PASS TWO “BAMBOO FARM” SIGNS/ARROWS!

And remember these visual markers: Gazebo, Goddess, Bamboo Farm sign, and Parking 610. If you do not see these things, you probably went up our neighbor’s driveway.
If you need assistance, our office number is (808) 572-6006 during the week during normal business hours from 10 am to 2 pm Hawaii Time. If you do not reach us at the office, please call the Main House at (808) 572-6523. If you still can’t reach anyone, call Kutira’s cell at (808) 280-3960 or 572-6006. If by any chance your cell phone does not work in the Haiku/Huelo Region, at the top of Hana Road before you turn down at mile marker 3.5, there is a phone booth.

But don’t worry- in all our years, we have had only a handful people that could not find us and they just forgot to print out our directions and ended up at our neighbor’s. Just go slowly, and once you arrive on the top to the road, read the directions carefully and you will be fine. We will be waiting for you.

Lost Luggage?

Occasionally, luggage does not make the connection flight and arrives the next day. If the airline needs to drop off your luggage, our physical address is:

Kahua O’Mali’o
610 Huelo Road
Haiku HI 96708

Give all the above phone numbers as well.

If you have any other needs or questions, please feel free to contact us. We are committed to making your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Maui no ka oi, Maui is the best, and we would like you to experience the magic of this island!

Additional Maui Eco Retreat Information
We have been named the “Greenest Spot on Maui” by Positively Green Magazine, and featured on the Travel Channel as one of Samantha Brown’s Top 5 Maui Eco-Activities.
We are also proud to announce that we have a legal Bed & Breakfast permit from the County of Maui, so we can officially welcome you to our special place, Kahua O’Malio – A Place of Happiness and Pleasure.

All of our buildings are ecologically built and are adorned with hand-crafted works of art from pacific and Asian countries. Our rooms have ocean views, and we are surrounded by lush jungle, ponds, flower gardens, fruit trees, and a nearby waterfall (reached by a short downhill climb) which flows into natural pools for swimming from which you can gaze upon the breath-taking view of the valley.

Our land is a wonderful place to wander and explore: you can take a short walk passing the chickens, the homes of our bees, countless species of flowers and plants and stop by our temples, where you can rest, relax and meditate. For the adventurer, our ocean trail is a moderately challenging cliff trail and the hike takes about a half an hour to get down to the ocean. You will enjoy the wild beauty and the untouched nature of this piece of rural Maui, which is occasionally visited by dolphins and turtles- but be sure to prepare with a good pair of hiking shoes, some snacks and feel your feet- the trail can be very slippery after a heavy rain.

Location

We are on the North Shore of Maui, just 40 minutes north/east of Kahului airport, and 30 minutes from Paia Town (on the way from the airport), which has lots of great restaurants and boutiques, a large health-food grocery store, internet cafés, bank, ATMs, post office, and lovely public sand beaches for walks or jogs, lounging, picnicking, sun, swimming and surfing.

Please let us know if there are specific activities or services that you are interested in, and we’ll be happy to get you connected!
